Tips for Preventing Gum Disease

Regular oral care does more than maintain your dazzling smile. It keeps your teeth disease free and your gums healthy. Gum disease is the most common cause of premature tooth decay and falling. However there are ways in which you can combat gum disease by paying attention to your diet, following a regular oral care regime and living a stress free and smoke free life.

Maintain a good dental care regime at home

Preventing gum disease is easy if you make up and follow a good dental care regime. Three things you should regularly do are brushing, flossing and using an anti bacterial mouthwash.

Brush your teeth twice every day with a good quality fluoride based toothpaste and a soft bristled toothbrush. Replace your toothbrush every two months and use it gently on your teeth.

Floss daily to remove sticky particles that cling to the gaps between your teeth. The toothbrush cannot reach these places and the absence of flossing will lead to plaque buildup and the onset of tartar.

Get to know your dentist

Most people avoid the dentist like the plague but the fact is you should go to for regular dental checkups if you want to have healthy gums and teeth. The onset of gum disease is silent and painless and you won’t even know that you have infected gums until much later. Curing gum disease when it has already progressed to an advanced stage is difficult. Make sure that you undergo professional mouth cleaning and plaque removal sessions if your dentist recommends them.
